SIERRA CLUB AND LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS TO SPONSOR

FORUM ON GAS DRILLING IN ARKANSAS

Rob Leflar

The “Fayetteville Shale Play” is the name for the massive projects to drill for natural gas in Arkansas’ Fayetteville Shale Formation. We all understand the importance of clean energy and increased severance tax revenue, but not enough attention has been paid to the environmental consequences of drilling operations employing a technique called hydraulic fracturing or “fracking.”

The Arkansas Sierra Club and the League of Women Voters of Arkansas will hold an educational forum focusing on the environmental effects of gas drilling, on Wednesday evening, Jan. 23 in the new courtroom at the University of Arkansas School of Law, Fayetteville. Experts from the Natural Resources Defense Council and from Texas, where problems have arisen from similar drilling operations in the Barnett Shale Play near Fort Worth, will speak in addition to representatives from energy industry, government and landowner perspectives.
